We also provide potentially life-saving colonoscopy screenings. Other physicians might perform procedures such as a colonoscopy, but our trained gastroenterology physicians are experts in finding and dealing with issues arising from preventative screenings.

Summit Health’s highly trained gastroenterologists are skilled at performing life-saving colonoscopy screenings for people who might be at risk but are not experiencing any symptoms. Early detection leads to more effective treatment and, ideally, prevention. Among cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in the United States. Screening helps to find and remove polyps before they become cancerous. It can also detect the cancer early when it is most treatable. If everyone who is 50 years or older were screened regularly, most deaths from this cancer could be avoided. Both men and women should consider screening beginning at the age of 50 whether or not they have signs or symptoms of colon cancer.

Who should screen?

  • Age 50 or older
  • Family history of colon cancer
  • History of Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Change in bowel habits
