Women need to know that one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lives. Screening is an effective way to identify and treat breast cancer at an early stage when it is treatable and curable.
Breast cancer screening
For an average-risk patient, starting at 40 years old, the recommendation is to start annual screening mammograms. The newer 3D tomography is even more effective in identifying early breast cancers.
High-risk breast cancer patients
For patients that are at higher risk for breast cancer based on a patient’s family member(s) with breast cancer, a personal history of breast cancer, or a genetic mutation, there are additional methods of screening that can be provided. Summit Health can provide personalized screening recommendations based on risk through our High-Risk Breast Cancer Clinic.
Women can live for decades after a breast cancer diagnosis. Even when detected at a later stage, effective treatments are available to help women live active, healthy lives despite their breast cancer diagnosis.
