Summit Health’s ENERGY Department Presents

December’s Healthy Life Lesson:

Traditional Chinese medicine is one of the oldest continuous systems of medicine in history, with recorded instances dating as far back as two thousand years before the birth of Christ. This is in sharp contrast to the American or Western forms of health care, which have been in existence for a much shorter time span. The primary feature of modern Chinese medicine is the premise that good health relies on the restoration and maintenance of harmony, balance and order to the individual. Traditional Chinese medicine takes a holistic approach to understanding normal function and disease processes and focuses as much on the prevention of illness as it does on the treatment. In the United States, people use traditional Chinese medicine primarily as a complementary health approach.

Presented By: Dr. Charlotte Lin, MD – Family Medicine

About The Presenter: Dr. Lin joined Summit Health’s Family Medicine team in 2009. She received her Bachelor of Science from Georgetown University and Medical Degree from University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Lin completed her residency at Tufts University and also completed additional training in acupuncture at UCLA. Prior to coming to Summit Health she worked on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona for 3 years. As a medical acupuncturist, she sees her role as a bridge between allopathic medicine and Chinese medicine.

In her spare time, Dr. Lin enjoys yoga, rock climbing, biking, running, sailing, skiing, scuba diving, learning new foreign languages and cooking.

New Year's Fitness Goals That You Can Do! @ Summit Health - 2nd Floor Physician's Lounge | Bend | Oregon | United States

It’s that time of year again: the time when people trade the Christmas turkey and holiday baking for running shoes and dumbbells. Chances are at some time in your life you’ve made a New Year’s resolution — and then broken it. This year, stop the cycle of resolving to make change and then not following through. If your resolution is to take better care of yourself and get healthy, you will have a much better year if you start by making small fitness goals rather than big resolutions.

The “Skinny” on Popular Fad Diets & Tips for Lifelong Weight Maintenance @ Summit Health - 2nd Floor Physician's Lounge
Feb 9 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

With all the focus on weight in our society, it isn’t surprising that millions of people fall prey to fad diets and bogus weight-loss products. Conflicting claims, testimonials and hype by so-called “experts” can confuse even the most informed consumers. The bottom line is simple: If a diet or product sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

There are no foods or pills that magically burn fat. No super foods will alter your genetic code. No products will miraculously melt fat while you watch TV or sleep. We all have unique lifestyles, traditions and health concerns. Not to mention tastes! So if you’re ready to eat right, don’t settle for a one-size-fits-all fad diet.

The Widowmaker - Movie Screening, Panel Discussion/Q&A @ Summit Health - Eastside Clinic - 2nd Floor Physicians' Lounge | Bend | Oregon | United States

Join Summit Health Cardiology for a free screening of the film The Widowmaker.

According to the CDC, an estimated 610,000 people die annually of heart disease (that’s 1 in 4 deaths) and an estimated 735,000 Americans die every year of a heart attack. Heart disease is the #1 killer in both men and women in this country.

Patrick Forbes’ new documentary, The Widowmaker uncovers a conspiracy of silence around the most vulnerable of human organs – the heart. Every minute of every year an American drops dead of a heart attack, a huge number without any warning or prior symptoms. The film tells the story of the often contentious development of both preventative and interventional cardiology and explores various technologies to prevent and stop heart attacks.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Summit Health Cardiologists Rick Koch MD, FACC, Ian Riddock, MD and Nahel Farraj DO, FACC, FSCAI as well as one of the film’s principals, Bruce Brundage MD, MACC.

Whole Foods will be providing complementary healthy snacks.
