Do you have family over for the holidays? Try this French toast stick recipe for an easy breakfast.

Serves 8.

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup of maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup of orange juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon of grated orange zest
  • Canola spray oil
  • 8 slices of whole grain bread
  • 4 eggs
  • 3/4 cup of whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon of grated nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon of fine sea salt

Method:

Combine the maple syrup, orange juice and zest in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce heat to a simmer for 10 minutes. Then remove from heat and keep warm until ready to use.

Move oven racks to the middle and top third of the oven. Then preheat to 375°F. Spray oil well over 2 large baking sheets.

Cut the whole grain bread slices into 1 inch wide sticks.

Whisk together the eggs, whole milk, vanilla, nutmeg and salt in a large bowl or shallow baking dish. Dip bread sticks into mixture and let excess drip off. Places dipped sticks onto prepared baking sheets and bake for 15 minutes. Remove bread sticks from oven and flip sticks over. Place back in oven and rotate the baking sheets from top to bottom until French toast sticks are golden brown on both sides (about an additional 10 minutes).

Serve with the previous made orange-maple syrup.
