Did you know that indoor tanners have a 75% increase in the risk of melanoma, a potentially fatal skin cancer?  70% of tanning salon patrons are Caucasian girls and women, ages 16-29 years old.  This fact is especially alarming considering that melanoma is the most common type of cancer in young adults 25-29 years old and the second most common type of cancer in people from ages 15 to 29.  UV radiation from the sun, as well as from tanning beds and sun lamps, is a known carcinogen (cancer-causing substance), just like tobacco.  Minimizing exposure to ultraviolet light can decrease your risk of skin cancer and signs of aging, such as wrinkles and brown spots.  Dermatologists recommend avoidance of tanning beds, sun protection and avoidance, and regular use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
