Common neurological disorders

Common nervous system disorders that a neurologist can diagnose and treat include:

Sometimes called a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), a stroke is a permanent brain injury due to either insufficient blood flow or hemorrhage, which causes sudden changes in neurologic function. Transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a short-lasting vascular brain injury without permanent injury.

Seizure is a sudden change in behavior caused by an electrical disturbance in the brain. Epilepsy is a propensity for recurrent seizures, which are often successfully treated with medication.

One of the most common medical complaints. Tension-type headaches and migraine headaches are the most common varieties of recurring headaches.

A cluster of neurologic symptoms or signs occurring immediately and sometimes lingering after head injury. Symptoms may include a change in consciousness, headache, dizziness, or a change in mental acuity.

Dementia is a decline in cognitive performance severe enough to impact daily function. Many conditions cause dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common degenerative dementia affecting the elderly.

An immune-mediated inflammatory disorder of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) with diverse symptoms.

A progressive, neurodegenerative movement disorder, commonly presenting with tremor, slow movement, rigidity, and problems walking.

A common and diverse problem of peripheral nerve damage, including nerve and nerve root impingement and inherited or acquired neuropathy. Common symptoms include numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness.

Stroke Awareness Oregon

Stroke Awareness Oregon hosts Stroke Support Groups that meet frequently monthly to provide support, motivation, commitment, and trust to all those impacted by stroke.

Through this pursuit of providing a peer resource to the community, we’ve adopted three support groups:

  • Stroke Survivor Group
  • Young(er) Support Group
  • The Caregiver Group

All of these are accessible via Zoom, so regardless of your geological position, all are welcome. As guest speakers are a common factor, they’re exciting to join and create a sense of trust. Visit the SAO Support Group page to learn more.
